TIETZ DEFIES NAZIS

Jews have been compelled to resign their posts in German banks Notable among the number were Wilhelm Kleeman, director of the Dresdner Bank and president of the Berlin Jewish Community, and another banker, Richer, of the same firm. Herr Kleeman was given seven days in which to resign and was threatened with serious consequences otherwise. American concerns also have been compelled to dismiss Jewish directors from their German concerns. The West German Leonard Tietz stores, numbering twenty, have been put under Christian management. Hermann Tietz, operator of one of Berlin’s greatest department stores, was threatened also with serious consequences but declined to dismiss the Jews in his employ. No Nazi action followed this defiance in view of the considerable amount of American capital involved in the enterprise. Hermann Tietz is thus one of the very few concerns still employing Jews.

Jews were forced on April 1 to dismiss their Jewish employes who were not reinstated after the Nazi boycott of the Jews. Scores of Jewish shops daily are exhibiting notices to the effect that they have passed under Christian management.
