TRIAL OF THE PEV. MARTIN NIEMOELLER ON CHARGES OF VIOLATING NAZI LAWS REGULATING RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES WAS TODAY POSTPONED FOR AN INDEFINITE PERIOD, THE HAVAS NEWS AGENCY REPORTED. IT HAD BEEN SCHEDULED TO OPEN TOMORROW.
LAST NIGHT ABOUT 120 PROTESTANTS WERE ARRESTED IN SUBURBAN DAHLEM, WHERE THE FORMER SUBMARINE COMMANDER HAD BEEN A PASTOR BEFORE HIS ARREST, FOR DEMONSTRATING IN FAVOR OF HIS RELEASE. THEY WERE FREED AFTER QUESTIONING.
TODAY’S POSTPONEMENT WAS SAID TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THE NEED FOR MORE TIME TO INVESTIGATE SOME OF THE CHARGES PENDING AGAINST PASTOR NIEMOELLER. (OTHER NEWS AGENCIES, HOWEVER, SAID THE POSTPONEMENT WAS MOTIVATED BY FEAR OF FURTHER DEMONSTRATION, DESCRIBED AS “AMAZING” SINCE THEY ARE THE FIRST UNDER THE HITLER REGIME.)
BEFORE YESTERDAY’S DEMONSTRATION PASTOR MESSOW, PREACHING IN ST. ANNE’S CHURCH, DAHLEM, ASKED LISTENERS TO PRAY FOR 64 PROTESTANT PREACHERS JAILED BY NAZI AUTHORITIES.
