The International News Service today reported from Bengazi that the Nazi occupation army there was especially cruel to the Jews.
Quoting a number of Jews who remained in Bengazi after the Axis retreat, the correspondent of the International News Service reported that one of them told him that the Nazis hanged four Bengazi Jews “as an example of what happens to those who are friendly to the British.” The Germans’ treatment of Jews was so bad that even the Arabs sympatized with them and aided them as much as possible, despite possible retaliation. Italian priests once interceded in the Jews’ behalf. The Nazi commandant curtly warned them to mind their own business. “You take care of God and we’ll take care of the Jews, “he told the Catholic clergymen.
