British newspapers today reported from various sources that the Nazi authorities were pressing their campaign for the annihilation of Jews and Poles in German-occupied Poland.
The Daily Telegraph said reports reaching Amsterdam indicated that the drive against Jews was in full swing, with thousands of Jewish men, women and children being expelled from their homes daily. “While a few months ago they could live in primitive huts and tents in the open fields,” the Amsterdam dispatch to the paper said, “the present cold weather has led to hundreds freezing to death and thousands more dying of hunger.”
The Manchester Guardian reported a new series of atrocities by German police and army men, adding that “there is not the slightest sign that the terror is coming to an end.” “All indications are,” it said, “that the Germans mean to stamp out all Polish civil, cultural and religious life.”
