The elimination of Jews from economic life in Holland along the same lines as in occupied France and other Nazi-held countries is contemplated by the Nazi administration there, according to Utrechtsch Dagblad, a Dutch daily newspaper published under Nazi censorship.
“Within a fortnight the entire commercial life of Amsterdam will be freed of Jewish domination,” the newspaper reports.
The report reveals that Jews in Amsterdam will no longer be permitted to use the municipal slaughterhouse, which actually amounts to depriving Jews of Kosher meat.
While isolating the Jews in Amsterdam from the rest of the population, the Nazi military authorities demand that Amsterdam Jewry contribute a large proportion of the 15,000,000 guilders (about $8,000,000) “fine” imposed by the Nazi administration upon the city as a penalty for the recent disorders against the occupation forces. The Nazi press in Germany attributes the anti-Nazi riots to an alleged “secret Jewish organization.”
Marshal Hermann Goering’s Essener National Zeitung came out with an article from its correspondent in The Hague requesting a “total solution of the Jewish question in Holland.” The correspondent says that the Jews are to be held responsible for the increasing sabotage in Holland. He demands that strict measure be taken against the Jews “in order to make it impossible for them to spread hate and dissension in Holland, to attack the Dutch population and to incite to cowardly acts.”
(The New York Times, in a cable from its Berlin correspondent, says that the cause of recent disturbances in Amsterdam remains clouded. Non-Nazi circles state that the measures taken by the Dutch National Socialist Party against the Jewish inhabitants of Amsterdam caused clashes. The Jews, it is said, were defended by Netherland workers, particularly stevedores in the harbor section. The police were forced to intervene, these sources continue, and did so with such sharpness that street car, gas and electric workers struck in sympathy with the Jews.)
Meanwhile, it was reported from Amsterdam that a Jew was executed by a German firing squad today and many others were sentenced to prison terms of ten years or more in connection with last week’s disorders. The Jew who was executed was accused of spraying acid on a Gestapo agent.
