The German High Command was reported today to have fixed the death penalty for anyone in occupied France found reading a newspaper published in the unoccupied area.
Trains reaching Bordeaux, it was said, are first stopped at the St. Macaire station and the passengers searched for newspapers by German soldiers.
Persons passing beyond this control point find posters displayed in occupied towns reading, “The Jew is the enemy of the French.”
