Martin Weiss and August Hering, commandants of the Vilna Thetto during the Nazi occupation, were today sentenced to life imprisonment by a German court bere following their conviction on charges of responsibility for and participation in the mass murder of 30,000 Jews.
The two, instrumental in the liquidation of the entire population of the Vilna ghetto, were also accused of personally murdering many Jews. One prosecution witness, a Jewish mother, accoused Weiss of having personally shot her child while she was carrying it in her arms.
