The National Conference on Soviet Jewry announced that it is undertaking a nation-wide action to protest against the Soviet Union’s ban on importing matzoh for use during the upcoming Passover holiday. The announcement was made yesterday at an NCSJ board of governors meeting. The board members, expressing great alarm about the ban, approved nation-wide action by the NCSJ’s 39 member agencies and recommended that appeals be made across the country to churches, synagogues, community organizations and youth groups.
The member agencies of the NCSJ and hundreds of local affiliated community groups throughout the United States coordinated by the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council have been instructed to alert officials, religious leaders and human rights organizations about the newly imposed ban. The NCSJ leadership labeled the action a direct violation of the 1975 Helsinki Final Act and a threat to Jewish life in the USSR.
