PRAISE FOR GREAT BRITAIN’S LOYALTY TO THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS AS EVIDENCED BY ITS ACTION IN SEEKING THERE A SOLUTION OF THE PALESTINE PROBLEM WAS VOICED TODAY BY SPANISH PREMIER JUAN NEGRIN, PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL, IN OPENING THE EIGHTEENTH ASSEMBLY.

“WE SEE,” SENOR NEGRIN DECLARED, “HOW THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WAS READY TO FACE THE MANDATES COMMISSION AND OFFER AN EXPLANATION OF ITS ADMINISTRATION IN PALESTINE. THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT DID NOT HESITATE TO DISCUSS THE DIFFICULTIES IT MET AND, IN REALIZATION OF ITS TASKS, THEY ASK THE MANDATES COMMISSION FOR ADVICE ON HOW TO SHAPE THE FUTURE POLICY OF PALESTINE IN ORDER TO ASSURE THE REIGN OF PEACE IN THAT PART OF THE MEDITERRANEAN. THEIR TASK IS VERY DIFFICULT. THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT HAS GIVEN US ALL A LESSON IN COMMON DISCIPLINE.”

BECK, ANTONESCU SEEK UNITED STAND

POLISH FOREIGN MINISTER JOSEF BECK AND COUNCIL RAPPORTEUR VICTOR ANTONESCU OF RUMANIA CONFERRED TODAY TO SEEK A BASIS FOR CONCERTED ACTION ON THE PALESTINE QUESTION.

SINCE POLAND IS NOT TO BE REPRESENTED ON THE COUNCIL’S SUBCOMMITTEE, COL. BECK IS BELIEVED TO HAVE ARRANGED FOR RUMANIA TO REPRESENT POLAND’S INTERESTS THERE. MR. BECK IS UNDERSTOOD TO HAVE ATTEMPTED TO SECURE MR. ANTONESCU’S APPROVAL TO THE BRITISH PROPOSAL SINCE THE RUMANIAN STATESMAN IS REPORTED SKEPTICAL ON ESTABLISHMENT OF A JEWISH STATE.

EARLIER ADVICES STATED POLAND AND RUMANIA HAD DEMANDED AT THE COUNCIL SESSION, WHICH OPENED SEPT. 10, THAT THE LEAGUE POSTPONE A FINAL DECISION ON THE PALESTINE PROBLEM AND APPOINT ITS OWN INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION TO INVESTIGATE THE SITUATION IN THE HOLY LAND. GREAT BRITAIN SUCCESSFULLY OPPOSED THIS DEMAND.
