Nelson Mandela arrived in Israel for his first visit to the Jewish state. The former South African president and Nobel Peace Prize winner, whose visit is seen as an indication that he is pleased with progress in Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, told reporters before meeting with Israeli President Ezer Weizman that he believes Iran and Syria are interested in peace. Mandela was also scheduled to hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, and visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial and the grave of Yitzhak Rabin.
