A group of nea-Nazis from Europe and the United States, wearing Nazi uniforms and armed with clubs, gathered at Adolf Hitler’s home town in Braunau on Saturday to celebrate the Nazi dictator’s 90th birthday and clashed with leftist demonstrators and policemen. Several persons were injured and police arrested II neo-Nazis.
Hours later, Chancellor Bruno Kreisky, campaigning for the May 6 general elections, spoke at a rally of his Social Democratic Party at Braunau. “There are still some incorrigible people who glorify the rule of the Nazis.” Kreisky told a crowd of 3000 under tight security measures. “We have to argue with them,” he said. “There is no use in staging counter demonstrations. because this gives them even more publicity.”
