Argentina’s new Minister of the Interior, Alvaro Alsogaray, was challenged here by the leading Yiddish newspaper in Latin America to “do something concrete and definite” not only to suppress but also to prevent further anti-Semitic outbreaks in this country.
An editorial in the Rosh Hashanah issue of the newspaper, E1 Diario Israelita, stated: “The diligent Interior Minister surely knows who, where and how these organizations are that were responsible for the anti-Semitic outbreaks.”
The newspaper questioned some of the phrasing of a statement on anti-Semitism issued last week by Mr. Alsogaray, who had termed the anti-Jewish manifestations as “a few episodes” which he called “truly insignificant.” “In truth,” stated the newspaper, “they were neither few nor insignificant. There were many episodes, occurring over a considerable period. In fact, they were encouraged through the impunity enjoyed by their authors.”
Pointing out that Mr. Alsogaray obviously wanted to help restore Argentina’s prestige, and noting that, prior to taking his federal office, the Minister had shown himself “a dynamic and resolute man, ” the editorial said: “In any event, the matter is in the hands of the Government, which can not only repress anti-Semitic acts but also prevent them.”
