Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti of Italy has proposed relocating the controversial Carmelite convent from the grounds of the Auschwitz death camp to a former convent near Rome.
His suggested site is at the Adreatine Forest, where the Nazis executed Jewish and Catholic hostages and resistance fighters during World War II.
The presence of the convent at Auschwitz, where 2 million Jews perished in the Holocaust, has severely strained Jewish-Catholic relations for the past two years.
