A newly-formed welfare committee for Palestine Jewish soldiers today issued a world-wide appeal for books to form a library for the troops and decided to contact local institutions to arrange assistance for the recruits families.
The committee, which includes Lady Edwin Samuel, Dr. Asron Barth and others, was formed by the Jewish Agency for Palestine and the Jewish National Council. Dr. Max Soloweitschik presided at its first meeting and Moshe Shertok and Isaac Ben-Zvi outlined plans for cultural work among the soldiers and assistance to their families.
Meanwhile, Palestine has been considerably cheered by news that British merchant vessels are discharging general cargos at Haifa, which, it is stated, disproves Axis propaganda of Italian control of the Mediterranean.
The Jewish National Council’s Social Welfare Department reported that it had assistance 78,000 persons during the past Jewish year, of whom 18,000 were children, and 40,000 workers, distributing a total of £154,000. The department also assisted illegal immigrants during detention and after release from internment camps, served as a liaison for Palestinians relatives abroad, aided victims of the Tel Aviv and Haifa bombings and established a special research institute.
