The newest Israel freighter, the 9,500 ton “Har Carmel,” slid down the ways here to the cheers of a large crowd of guests and shipyard workers. The vessel is one of four ordered by El Yam, Ltd, a private shipping company, within the framework of the reparations agreement between Israel and West Germany.
The ship, which will have a cargo capacity of 14,500 tons, is designed for the inter-national tramp trade. It will carry, among other products, grain and steel from the United States. The “Har Carmel” has seven cargo holds, is specially strengthened for navigation in icy waters and will carry the latest radar and automatic pilot equipment. Its top speed will be 14 knots. The cargo vessel, which will carry a crew of 43 and accommodations for a limited number of passengers, will be finished by the end of the year.
