Rabbi David Askenazi, Chief Rabbi of Oran, has been appointed temporary Chief Rabbi of Algiers, and will hold the latter post until a permanent Chief Rabbi is found. He will also continue as Chief Rabbi of Oran. His appointment filled the vacancy created by the death two years ago of Chief Rabbi Eisenbeth.
Rabbi Askenazi called on the Catholic Archbishop of Algiers and later made a statement that he would work for peace in strife-torn Algeria and for “brotherly union” between the three religious groups–Islam, Christianity and Judaism. He also announced that a new synagogue will be built in the center of Algiers.
