“The attitude of the Bulgarian Government towards the Jewish question has not changed,” the new Bulgarian Commissar for Jewish Affairs, M. Stemonyakev, announced today in a radio broadcast from Sofia. Stemonyakev replaces Dr. Alexander Beleff, who resigned last week.
Emphasizing that “the anti-Jewish laws in Bulgaria will not be modified,” the Bulgarian Minister of Interior issued an order permitting Jews to sell their movable property, though it had been formally confiscated by the government, This measure, the Minister stated, aims to speed up the removal of Jews from their dwellings, which are to be Occupied by non-Jews. The money which the Jews will receive for their property will have to be deposited in blocked accounts to be withdrawn in monthly payments under the supervision of government authorities, the Minister explained. He warned that persons violating the anti-Jewish laws, whether Jews or non-Jews, will be punished severely.
The German new agency DNB today reported that a list of Bulgarian saboteur published in Sofia “contains the names of no less than 141 Jews.” The report also says that ” of a band of seven terrorists recently arrested in Bulgaria, no less then six were Jews.”
