Percy & Straus, Associate Chairman of the Business Men’s Council, presided at the luncheon given yesterday by the council at the Hotel Pennsylvania in honor of Joseph L. Buttenwieser, the new President of the Federahundred merchants were present.
A deficit of $1,250,000 faces the federation for the support of the ninety-one institutions, according to Dr. Solomon Lowenstein, executive director, who told of the needs of various institutions. Z. D. Bernstein outlined several plans by which the council, which is the money collecting machine of the federationk would attempt to raise this money, and asked for increasing support.
Mr. Buttenweiser said: “In a period of such great prosperity in the United States as exists at the present time, there was no excuse for the Jews not being able to raise approximately five million dollars a year for the institutions.”
