Uri Ben Ari, the new Israel Consul General in New York, told a press conference today at the Israel Consulate that “Israel is here to stay” despite all the difficulties facing the Jewish State. He said that Israel and the Jewish people are presently “in a state of emergency.” Not all Jews, he noted, are aware of this situation and one of his major tasks will be to create this awareness among Jews.
Ben Ari, 50, who replaced David Rivlin, now Ambassador to Norway, was born in Berlin and came to Palestine in 1939. He is a brigadier general in the reserves and was deputy-commander of the southern command on the Egyptian front during the Yom Kippur War. His post here is his first diplomatic one.
