The Dumont Board of Education, by a vote of six to three, rejected proposals by a Protestant group for a released time program in the public schools of this community. Under this proposal, children would have been released from school during school hours, to receive outside religious instruction.
The proposal was opposed by Rabbi Jerome M. Blass of the Bergenfield-Dumont Jewish Center, Rabbi Judah Washer of the Teaneck Jewish Community Center, and Sam Brown, regional director of the New Jersey Region of the American Jewish Congress. Rabbi Blass took the position that the proposal was an infringement of the principle of separation of Church and State and would create difficult administrative problems.
