The new Government Statutes regulating the affairs of the Jewish Communities in Poland, restricting their budgets to purely religious purposes and fixing the Jewish Community tax at a maximum of 10 per cent. of the State taxes paid by any member of the Community, will mean a very considerable reduction of the revenue of the Jewish Communities, which will make it impossible for them to conduct even purely religious activities, Mr. Eli Mazur, the Agudist President of the Warsaw Jewish Community, declared in presenting a report on the situation to a Conference of representatives of ten of the largest Jewish Communities in the country, held here to-day to consider what action to take in order to avert the economic difficulties created for the Jewish Communities by the new Government measure.
A Committee of eight members has been appointed by the Conference to take steps to call together an All-Polish Conference of Jewish Communities to consider the question and to take appropriate action.
The Zionist representatives at the Conference asked that it should deal also with the question of Article 20 of the Jewish Communities Law, which was promulgated shortly before the last Jewish communal elections, debarring from participation Jews who have declared themselves not of Jewish faith, but although the general sense of the gathering was opposed to the action of Paragraph 20, it was decided by the majority that the matter should not now be raised.
