Dr. Hyman Alpern, recently appointed principal of Evander Childs High School, had an interesting educational career since coming to this country from Bialystok, Poland. Previous to his appointment he was first assistant in modern languages at De Witt Clinton.
After arriving here his family settled in Paterson, N. J., where he attended school and was graduated with high honors. He then moved to this city and after graduation from Stuyvesant High School with honors he entered City College on a scholarship. He enlisted in the classical languages course, won the Riggs Gold Medal in English composition, the General Tremain first prize of $150 in history and honors in Latin and Greek.
In 1921 he entered Columbia University and studied Romance philology and literature. Upon graduation he took similar courses at New York University. He passed examinations in Spanish, French, Provencal, Catalan, German and Latin and received a Ph. D.
Dr. Alpern won the Evander Childs post in competition with nine other candidates selected for final consideration from sixty-four original candidates. He is the son of Rabbi and Mrs. Samuel Alpern.
