He enlisted in the classical languages course, won the Riggs Gold Medal in English composition, the General Tremain first prize of $150 in history and honors in Latin and Greek.
In 1921 he entered Columbia University and studied Romance philology and literature. Upon graduation he took similar courses at New York University. He passed examinations in Spanish, French, Provencal, Catalan, German and Latin and received a Ph. D.
Dr. Alpern won the Evander Childs post in competition with nine other candidates selected for final consideration from sixty-four original candidates. He is the son of Rabbi and Mrs. Samuel Alpern.
