The official gazette today published the new statute on minorities adopted by the cabinet, under which all Rumanian citizens, irrespective of religion, are guaranteed equality before the law. Minorities are permitted to use their mother language in religious and private commercial affairs and in their press, and to establish religious and social organizations in the districts where they preponderate. Minorities’ banks and cooperative organizations are permitted to function.
In addition to the official Rumanian flag, minorities’ associations are permitted to fly their own flag. Minority schools will be subsidized by the State, with teaching permitted in the mother tongue.
Prof. Silviu Dragomir, former Minister Without Portfolio in the Goga Cabinet, was appointed commissioner for minorities. He was charged with similar duties in the Goga regime.
