A new trial began in Frankfurt this morning for Dr. Franz Bernard Lucas, a former doctor in the Auschwitz concentration camp who in 1965. after a 20 month trial, was sentenced to 39 months in prison for his part in the murder of 1,000 Jews. Six other defendants in that trial were sentenced to life imprisonment. Eleven others received sentences of up to 14 years. Dr. Lucas appealed his conviction and the High Court ordered a retrial. The appeals of the other 16 defendants were rejected. The new trial is expected to last three months.
