Eighteen seats on the Jewish Community’s General Assembly here which have remained vacant for over a decade will shortly be filled by appointment, the Chief Rabbinate of Turkey announced today. The Assembly is a 60-member body representing both lay and religious organizations.
The action follows the recent government decree giving the Jewish community autonomy in the control of its own communal institutions. Previously, the Jews could not hold an election to fill the seats left vacant by death and resignation because the necessary permission was not granted by the Governor of Istanbul.
