Laurence V. Michelmore, newly appointed Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, left today for his agency’s headquarters at Beirut, Lebanon. He is expected to visit Geneva and several other European cities in the next week or 10 days before assuming his new post as head of the UN arm in charge of relief for the more than 1,200,000 Arabs on its refugee rolls.
Mr. Michelmore, former deputy director of the personnel for the United Nations, is an American, like all of his predecessors at the head of UNRWA since that agency started functioning, exactly 14 years ago. He succeeds Dr. John H. Davis, who served in the post five years.
