A two-block section of a street in lower Manhattan was yesterday renamed in honor of Asser Levy, leader of the group of 23 Jews who came to New York in 1654 and started what became the first Jewish community in America.
The street was renamed at a ceremony attended by Borough President Hulan Jack of Manhattan. The ceremony was part of New York City’s celebration of the tercentenary of Jewish settlement in this country.
