— A joint resolution of the New York State Senate and Assembly proclaimed March 28 to April 28 as “New York Education Month” in honor of the 30th year of leadership by Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, the rebbe of the Lubavitcher movement.
The resolution, which also honored Schneerson on his 78th birthday, was sponsored in the Assembly by Speaker Stanley Fink and Assemblyman Howard Lasher, and in the Senate by Senate leaders Warren Anderson and John Marchi. A special reception was held for Senate and Assembly members in the House Speaker’s conference room.
Fink said that “it is only natural to have such a resolution in honor of the rebbe, as the rebbe is doing so much for education. Marchi said “I recognize the need for this resolution as I had the good fortune to meet Rabbi Schneerson, who has an international movement with education branches all over the world.”
The resolution was accepted for the movement by Rabbi David Raskin and Rabbi Shmuel Bufman, director of the Lubavitch Youth Organization. Butman told the solons that “education is the Ley to the future and the only way to secure a society of dignity, peace and justice.” Lasher recalled that in January, 1978, Congress passed a joint resolution proclaiming April 18, 1978, Schneerson’s 78th birthday, as Education Day U.S.A., which was immediately signed by President Carter.
Butman said other activities marking Schneerson’s 78th birthday included the operation of 78 Mitzvah Mobiles operated by Lubavitcher youth organization members in the New York metropolitan area. Special stands were put up in the supermarkets and hundreds of schools were visited by Lubavitch representatives during the pre-Passover school days.
