The Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York announced today that a Jewish Institute of Geriatrics will be built in the Queens section at a cost of $10,500,000. The new long term nursing facility for physically and mentally impaired patients will pioneer new geriatric concepts. It will combine residential, medical and psychiatric care.
Three Federation affiliates will participate in the new facility. They are the House and Hospital of the Daughters of Israel, the Long Island Jewish Hospital and Hillside Hospital.
The Daughters of Israel Home will build the 500-bed, 10-story facility, and will furnish it with equipment and facilities at an additional cost of $1,500,000. The Long Island Jewish Hospital, which made available five acres near its main building as the site for the Institute, will provide and supervise all medical services. Hillside Hospital, a leading psychiatric institution, will supervise all psychiatric programs.
Samuel J. Silverman, Federation president, said the new Institute was the result of 10 years of study of community needs which indicated that, by 1970, there would be more than 1,000,000 persons 65 or over in New York City. Ground breaking for the new Institute is expected in the spring of 1967 and full operation is scheduled for 1969.
