Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller, of New York State, and New York City’s Mayor Robert F. Wagner issued special Rosh Hashanah greetings today. Gov. Rockefeller, noting that “the Jewish New Year is the oldest anniversary in the history of the human race,” pointed out that, “dispersed through many lands, persecuted and driven from country to country, the Jewish people not only survived but also preserved their religion. May the year 5726 be inscribed as a year of increasing endeavor in behalf of human justice and peace to all men of good will.”
Mayor Wagner, in a proclamation issued at City Hall, stated: “On the eve of the Jewish New Year, it is appropriate for us all to pause and reflect on the great Judaic principles of faith and justice which formed the basis of Western civilization. In these troubled times, it is incumbent on all men of good will to rededicate themselves to these principles. Let us move ahead together in search of universal peace and well-being.”
