A goal of $18,000,000 has been set by the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York for its 41st annual appeal on behalf of 116 member hospitals, health and social service agencies which last year served more than 700,000 men, women and children, it was announced today by Lawrence A. Wien, campaign chairman. The campaign will open October 9 and will continue through January 31, 1959.
Mr. Wien asserted that campaign officials had taken “inventory” of the potential dollars it can expect without special effort. “Last year, we raised about $16,000,000. From this, there is a normal attrition from deaths, business reversals and dozens of other factors of about an additional $2,000,000,” he went on. “This leaves us needing to raise in increased contributions and new gifts a total of $4,000,000 to hit the minimum target that will safeguard community services and institutions.” Mr. Wien said that the $4,000,000 represents a “Crisis in Maintenance” Fund, a term that has become the theme and slogan of this year’s drive.
