The U.S. Congress was urged today by Mayor Vincent R. Impellitteri of New York to vote grants-in-aid for Israel “as it has done to other friendly nations.” He spoke at a conference of the Council of Organizations of the United Jewish Appeal, attended by 3,000 delegates.
Seconding the Mayor’s plea was James G. McDonald, America’s first Ambassador to Israel who retired recently from his post. He praised the achievements of Israel but warned of the dangers facing the Jewish state if sufficient funds were not raised in the near future to enable it to cope with its present economic difficulties.
