New York Professor Named to Berlin Chair for History on Judaism

Dr. Adolf Leschnitzer, Professor of German at New York’s City College and a well-known Jewish educator, has accepted a call from the Free University in West Berlin to the newly-established Chair for the History of German Judaism.

Prof. Leschnitzer, who was born at Posen in 1899, headed the Education Department of the Reich Association of German Jews during the first six years of the Hitler regime. He came to the United States in 1940 and has been a professor of German at Brooklyn and City College since 1946. He has served as a visiting professor at the Free University for the past several years. Among his works are “Faust and Moses,” “The Birth of ‘Modern’ Anti-Semitism,” “The Sociology of Anti-Semitism,” and a study on German-Jewish relationships, “Saul and David.”
