The Board of Education of New York City is studying a guide which would instruct teachers how to strengthen and emphasize the belief in God, as well as “develop moral and spiritual values common to all faiths” among the 900,000 children in the city’s public schools.
The proposed guide has been approved by the board of superintendents and is now before a Board of Education committee on instructional affairs, but has not yet come before the Board for final approval before distribution to teachers. The New York Teachers Guild, an AFL affiliate, has urged Charles H. Silver, president of the Board, to hold public hearings before approving the guide.
