The people of Belgium were honored today by the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York, for their role in welcoming refugees seeking asylum and haven over the years. Carlos van Bellinghen, Belgian Consul-General and Minister Plenipotentiary, received an award on behalf of his country at UJA headquarters at a special ceremony.
The Belgian Consul-General was presented with a scale replica of Michelangelo’s Moses from Jack D. Weiler, a chairman of Trustees of the city UJA and a national chairman of the nationwide UJA drive. Mr. Weiler praised Belgium’s people for welcoming Jewish refugees over the years, as they sought asylum from Hitler and in more recent years as they sought haven in transit from other areas of the world. He said that the Belgian government had always cooperated closely in this work with UJA agencies overseas.
