The Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association announced its sponsorship today of a playwriting contest for the best play for children in 1963-1964. The award will be a production of the winning play at the 92nd Street YM-YWHA in New York with a professional cast plus a cash prize of $200 for the best play of general interest and a $200 cash prize for the best play of Jewish interest.
Only unpublished manuscripts will be considered for the contest, which is open to both professional and amateur writers, the announcement said. The play may have been produced. It may have an original plot or add an original treatment to a popular children’s story. It should be written to appeal to an audience of school age children, approximately 5-12 years of age. The playing time should be about one and one-half hours.
All manuscripts must be postmarked before April 1, 1963. The award will be announced before July 1, 1963. The author’s name should not appear on the manuscript, but should be securely attached to a sealed envelope, the announcement stressed.
