Two New York writers, both associated with the Jewish Daily Forward, and three Israelis were recipients of the 10th annual Itzhak Manger Award for their works in the Yiddish language. The American winners are Meir Stiker, city editor of the Forward, and Mordechai Shtrigler, a Yiddish writer who contributes to the paper. Both flew to Israel to accept the awards at ceremonies attended by Tel Aviv Mayor Shlomo Lehat, Leon Dulzin, chairman of the World Zionist Organization Executive and hundreds of Yiddish writers.
The Israeli recipients were Uri Tzvi Greenberg, Eli Shectman and Rachel Fishman. A special award was presented to Nehama Hendel, the Yiddish stage artist and singer who immigrated to Israel recently from the Soviet Union.
