The Jewish Community Council of Essex County and a number of its beneficiary agencies announced they will cease recognition of Social Service Employees Union, Local 11, as bargaining agent for their employees on termination of the existing agreement on December 31.
The union and its parent organization, United Office and Professional Workers of America, were expelled from the C.I.O. because the policies and actions of U.O.P.W.A. “are consistently directed toward the achievement of the program and purposes of the Communist Party rather than the objectives and policies set forth in the C.I.O. constitution. “
In a letter to the employees the Council gave its reasons for its move and said it desired to maintain collective bargaining relations with its employees. The council and its agencies regard their employees, it added, “as hard-working, loyal and upright American citizens. ” It assured them that no benefits they now enjoy would be reduced or impaired as a result of the withdrawal of recognition from the union.
