Present kashruth supervision methods for poultry were severely condemned by the “Upholders of the Faith,” recently formed organization during a meeting attended by 100 persons at the Great Central Palace.
Rabbis, butchers and poultry dealers heard the “plombes” denounced at the Tuesday evening meeting by Rabbi Bokstein as merely signifying religious supervision and not necessarily indicating kashruth. Previously a speaker had charged that tagged poultry sold by many butchers was non-kosher and the statement almost precipitated a clash.
One of the few rabbis opposing the ban on untagged poultry, Rabbi Barishansky of the Bronx, declared that according to Hebrew law the issur should not have been proclaimed. He was upheld by Rabbi Fleisher, who deplored the fact that City Hall intervention had been asked in the kashruth tangle.
Another resolution approved supervision by Rabbi Fleisher. Two other speakers, Rabbis Kalfuss and Barash, charged that “plombes” cause many non-kosher chickens to be sold.
Dr. Leon Adler was chairman of the meeting.
