Accusing the Newspaper Guild of aiming to undermine the existence of the Jewish Writers Union, the professional organization of Jewish writers, a conference of 655 Jewish national and local organizations, including labor unions, fraternal and cultural bodies, held Sunday at the Capitol Hotel, adopted a resolution condemning the Newspaper Guild for “raiding” the field of Jewish journalism by declaring a strike against the “Day”, New York Yiddish newspaper.
The conference was called by the Jewish Writers Union, whose members oppose the Guild strike. The organizations participating in the conference were represented by 1,733 delegates said to voice the sentiments of over a million members. The resolution charged that the Guild is a “Communist-controlled body” and that its “raid” on the Jewish journalistic profession and on the “Day” was “a Communist attempt to annihilate the Jewish press.”
Principal speakers at the conference were Reuben Guskin, Chairman of The United Hebrew Trades and president of the Workmen’s Circle, Dr. B. Zivion-Hoffman, president of the Jewish Writers Union, Vincent J. Ferris of Allied Printing Trade Council, L. Siegel, General Secretary of the Jewish National Workers Alliance, Ab. Miller of the Joint Board of the Amalgamated Labor Union, Dr. S. Margoshes, editor of the “Day”, Morris Feinstone, General Secretary of the United Hebrew Trades and M.D. Mekler editor-of the Jewish Morning Journal.
All speakers joined in charging that the Newspaper Guild sought to impose “dual unionism” upon the Jewish journalistic profession which has been organized with the Jewish Writers Union for the last 25 years.
