Nine Jews arrested by the Turkish police during the Jewish protest demonstration at the funeral of Elsa Niego, the Jewish girl who was murdered by Osman Bey, Turkish office, for refusing to marry him, were arraigned before the correctional court of Stamboul yesterday. The case was adjourned until August 27
Osman Bey was also arraigned before the court which sentenced him to “preventative arrest” in order to protect him from possible danger.
The demonstration started at the funeral of the girl. The majority of the demonstrants were Jewish girls who protested against the outrage, shouting “We want justice.” Osman Bey narrowly escaped being lynched by the crowd. Traffic was interrupted.
The Turkish authorities took an offended view, declaring they are incensed at the behavior of the Jewish demonstrants. It was stated that the incident may have an important effect on the relations between Jews and Turks which hitherto have been good.
