The United States cannot afford in the present world situation to discriminate against members of minority groups in employment, Vice President Richard Nixon told a national conference here yesterday. The conference on Minority Community Resources, attended by 500 community leaders from 37 states, was called by the President’s Committee on Government Contracts, of which Mr. Nixon is chairman.

Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell echoed the Vice President’s sentiments, asserting that aside from the economic necessity to end discrimination, members of minority communities were entitled to equal employment opportunities as a matter of “right.” President Eisenhower, in a message to Maxwell M. Rabb, secretary of the Cabinet and a member of the committee, said: “The maintenance of our security and our standard of living depends upon the full use of the highest capabilities of our people.

The President’s Committee on Government Contracts was appointed to prevent discrimination in employment by any firm awarded a contract by the Federal Government or paid with Federal funds.
