No invitation has so far been extended to Israel by the Big Powers to join the proposed East Mediterranean defense organization. Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett declared here today upon his return from the United States.
Referring to the developments in Egypt, Mr. Sharett said that Israel must maintain constant alertness. He expressed the opinion that these developments must have come as a surprise to both the British and the Egyptians. He indicated that he expects to proceed to Paris in about ten days as head of the Israeli delegation to the United Nations General Assembly, which opens there early next month.
Reuters reported here today from Damascus that the Syrian Parliament was told last night by Foreign Minister Faydi el-Atassi that Syria would reject any invitation to join a Middle East defense plan.
