Isaac Nofach, first Jewish magistrate in modern Palestine, died in Paris yesterday following an operation. Deep sorrow was felt throughout the Jewish community on receipt of word of his death here.
The late Mr. Nofach was a native of Russia. He was graduated from the University of St. Petersburg, taking degrees in law and Oriental languages. He spent many years in Constantinople where he studied Turkish law. He was helpful to the Zionist leaders in their negotiations with the new Turkish government following the Young Turk Revolution in 1912.
He came to Palestine following the World War and took an active part in the early years of the new regime. He was the director of the Jewish court of peace, first organized in Tel Aviv as a court of arbitration, settling disputes on the basis of Jewish law and precedent. Later he was appointed magistrate in Tel Aviv by the government. He held this post until his death.
