A 72-year-old non-Jew, whose life was saved by an Atlanta Jewish surgeon during the Bataan in 1942, after he had been frightfully mangled by a Japanese bomb, showed his appreciation by contributing $5,000 to the United Jewish Appeal through the Atlanta Welfare Fund.
Dr. Alfred A. Weinstein, Atlanta surgeon, received the check last week from Max Blouse, a resident of Manila. Dr. Weinstein, chief surgeon at a general field hospital in the Philippines, performed a series of operations on Blouse, who, at the age of 62, had rejoined the American forces resisting the Japanese. Dr. Weinstein described the episode in his book, “Barbed-Wire Surgeon.” Both Dr. Weinstein and his patient were later prisoners of the Japanese.
