The first Christian committee formed to raise funds for persecuted Jews abroad has been organized as the American National Christian Committee for German Refugees, composed of representative citizens of both Protestant and Catholic communions, it was announced yesterday by Dr. S. Parkes Cadman, chairman of the committee, in a letter addressed to Felix M. Warburg, national chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, which is seeking $3,000,000 in the United States for German Jewish relief.

Stating that the committee of Christians had been formed “at the request of James G. McDonald, League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.” Dr. Cadman said the purpose of the new organization is “to bring to Christian people everywhere a sense of their obligation and opportunity to assume their proper share of responsibility for meeting the appalling need of these victims of political policies, whether Christians or Jews.”

RECOGNIZE RESPONSIBILITY

In the course of his letter to Mr. Warburg stating that the committee had been formed “to arouse among Christian people an interest in the fate of the refugees coming out of Germany, and to raise funds for their relief,” Dr. Cadman said:

“Christians have been more than once reminded by Mr. McDonald that they have everywhere failed ‘to realize the seriousness of the problem or the extent of their responsibility.’ We recognize that responsibility. At the same time we honor the broadly humanitarian spirit of our Jewish friends who have distributed their relief funds without regard to racial or sectarian distinctions.

“Realizing that a considerable proportion of the refugees are Christians, both Catholic and Protestant, who, Mr. McDonald has said, are ‘ignored by Christian charities and are almost entirely dependent upon money contributed by Jewish organizations,’ we want to bring to Christian people everywhere a sense of their obligation and opportunity to assume their proper share of responsibility for meeting the appalling need of these victims of political policies, whether Christians or Jews.

“Specifically, we desire in every practicable way to support the campaign for $3,000,000 in which the United Jewish Appeal is now engaged, and to this end we tender you our co-operation throughout the country. We are calling upon Christian leaders in the various centers in which your campaigns are to be set up to cooperate to the full with your committees. It would, perhaps, be helpful if Christian committees should be organized to assist in securing funds from Christian sources in cooperation with the United Jewish Appeal in behalf of the German refugees. We want you to know that we will do all in our power to encourage this in each of the cities in which you work.”
