The non-sectarian community committee of the New York United Jewish Appeal officially launched its campaign tonight at a dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel Addressed by Mayor William O’Dwyer, Governor Thomas E. Dewey, Henry Ford II, Nelson Rockefeller, chairman of the committee, and Edward M.M. Warburg, head of the New York U.J.A.
Gov. Dewey told the 1,000 notables present that the Jews of Europe who need aid “are our fellow comrades-in-arms in a war which for them began fourteen years ago and which only we, by our help, can bring to an end.” Mayor O’Dwyer said that the gigantic problem of rehabilitating the Jews overseas cannot be met by the over-burdened governments of Europe or UNRRA.
Mr. Rockefeller, who presided, introduced the speakers, who were heard over a nation-wide network of the Columbia Broadcasting System. The dinner menu totalled only 700 calories in order to conserve food for shipment abroad.
