Simple services for Louis Wiley, business manager of the New York Times for many years, at Temple Emanu-El Friday were attended by 1,800 men and women representing industry, society, journalism and the arts.
Dr. Samuel H. Goldenson read the prayer and delivered the eulogy, assisted by Dr. Nathan Krass, rabbi emeritus. Gottfried H. Federlein, temple organist, played a program of music.
In his eulogy Rabbi Goldenson said:
“The very impulses that made him kind in action and sympathetic in understanding, together with the urge to know fully and accurately, gave him a sense of the social significance of news gathering and news appraisal.
“With such a nature it was inevitable that he should regard the press as a social agency and not as a personal vehicle.”
Pallbearers included such noted men as Adolph S. Ochs, Arthur H. Sulzberger, Colonel Julius Ochs Adler, Dr. John H. Finley, Carr V. Van Anda, Edwin S. Friendly, Dr. Murray Bartlett, Thomas A. Watson, John W. Davis, William D. Guthrie, James W. Gerard, Alexander C. Mattison, Major General Dennis E. Nolan, Brigadier General Cornelius Vanderbilt and Owen D. Young. Burial was in Kensico Cemetery.
