Laurie Magnus, a leading critic of literature, director of the publishing house of George Routledge and Sons, Ltd, for many years editor and publisher of the “Jewish Guardian” and until last year editor of the “Jewish Standard,” died here last night. He was sixty years old.
Mr. Magnus was the author of numerous literary and historical works, among them “English Literature in its Foreign Relations”, “Dictionary of European Literature, 2nd Edition”, “The Third Great War in relation to Modern History.” He was a member of the Council of the Royal Society of Literature.
Serving in the Royal defence corps throughout the war, he attained the rank of Major, and was twice decorated for valuable services. At one time Mr. Magnus was the head of the anti-Zionist movement in England, but recently his views on Zionism had considerably changed, and he became a supporter of the Jewish Agency for Palestine.
