The sum of $15,000 has been bequeathed to the Canadian Jewish National Fund by the late Lionel S. B. Shapiro, war correspondent and author, it was announced here by Justice Harry Batshaw, chairman of the Canadian JNF Foundation. He said the money would be used to commemorate the memory of Mr. Shapiro with a forest of 10,000 trees in the Canada Forest in Israel.
The correspondent was the author of four books. His final book, “The Sixth of June,” describing the Normandy invasion which he covered as a war correspondent, was a Book-of-the-Month Club choice and won him the Governor-General’s Award for fiction in 1955. He died here May 27, 1958.
